All good things must come to an end, including this year's wonderful schedule of early American arts and crafts classes held at the Nantucket Historical Association's 1800 House. The classes, that began in May, are wrapping up for the season with three, one-day holiday workshops featuring miniature sailor's valentines, gilded glass Christmas ornaments and a special theorem painting course with creations suitable for cards, gift tags and other festive uses.
On Tuesday, Nov. 3, Elizabeth Braun will assist students in making three-inch octagonal sailor's valentines within wooden frames. Each student will create two valentines, but if they want to make more they may purchase additional materials for a small fee.
Braun explained that it is a myth that sailors on whaling voyages became bored at sea and made sailor's valentines as gifts for their sweethearts and ways to while away the time. Actually, sailor's valentines were purchased by whalers at ports in Barbados and other Caribbean islands.
