Winter wonderland in the capital to put family first

CHILDREN in the capital are set to get their skates on for Christmas as winter attractions were unveiled for the festive season yesterday, writes Allison Bray .

A medieval Christmas fair, dazzling displays of Christmas lights and ice skating at Smithfield market are among the activities planned for Dublin .

Despite the recession, Dublin City and the Dublin City Business Association will be hosting one of the biggest programmes of winter events to date. This year sees a return to the traditional Christmas celebrations with a special focus on family events.

The annual Christmas light switch-on takes place on Henry Street on November 15 followed by Grafton Street on November 17, culminating in the lighting of the 60-foot high LED tree on O'Connell Street at 4:30pm on November 22. The 'Dublin on Ice' ice-skating rink re-opens from November 20 to January 10.

The Mansion House will also open its doors to families on December 8 for its annual 'Family Day' with street performances, balloon modelling, and face painting.
