Bronze sculpture sat in Cleveland man's back yard for 40 years, fetches ...
02.11.09
The bronze statue, 4 feet tall and turning green, was already in the garden when a man bought a home – contents and all – on Cleveland's near West side four decades ago.
There it stayed until Oct. 25, when the piece was sold through the Cleveland Auction Co. in Tremont. The little garden statue fetched $100,000 – plus an $18,000 commission for the auctioneer.
The piece, a woman carrying a water vessel, was created in Paris in 1931 by Egyptian sculptor Mahmoud Mokhtar, known as the father of modern Egyptian art for whom a museum is dedicated in Cairo. Mokhtar (1891-1934) studied in Paris. How the sculpture ended up hidden in a Cleveland garden is a mystery.
"If these pieces could only tell us their stories," said Kelly Grimm of the Cleveland auction house.
The seller – an artist who attended the auction – and the buyer, a collector who bid by phone – both asked to remain anonymous.
Grimm was thrilled with the sale – the most ever paid at auction for a Mokhtar bronze – and said what's more amazing is that the seller almost settled for $3,000 from an antique dealer a few years ago, but decided not to sell then.

Jerry and Darla Arnold knows how to do Christmas right. With thousands of old Christmas ornaments in their collection, it takes nearly two dozen trees just make a fraction of their premium each year. Recently, Jerry has spoken to us and share his profound knowledge of German Christmas ornaments in the U.S. and the variety of materials used in their manufacture of corrugated cardboard ornaments made in Dresden for wire-strung Glass Bead ornaments of Czechoslovakia.
There are about 42 years, my wife, Darla, went to a very large sale white elephant and found a box of antique Christmas ornaments. She thought they were wonderful, so she has bought, which has been his passion since. Finally, the ornaments became my passion, too. We collected 42 years now. Our collection is not the biggest or best, but it is very nice. We put up 23 trees in ancient feathers Christmas and they all have old Christmas ornaments.
For years we were very much against the trees are themed, but when you have thousands of ornaments and you try to do something different every year, you will eventually begin to trees subject.Years ago, I had this idea of a tree only blue decorated with blue ornaments, so I started to put aside everything that was blue on him. Which proved to be very successful tree. Many people liked it.
We are also a tree with birds and all-related-glass birds, birds of Dresden paper, foil birds, birdcages. I even put a little real bird nests inside the branches. Therefore it is a little different.
We take a lot of time with our screens. We do not have a home terribly important, with 23 trees, you should be able to have friends come and walk without bumping against them, then we try to do clever arrangements. My wife especially loves creating little vignettes on the shelves. If we have a small tree, it will save a small village around it with some small animals....
