STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- On Halloween, vigilance and advance preparation are important for families dealing with food allergies. Indeed, there are ways to make the day safer.
Allergies can be so severe that some families avoid traditional trick or treating altogether. Others implement modifications. One technique is to provide safe treats in a sealed baggie ahead of time to friends and relatives. When your child rings the bell, they reach into the baggie and hand over the safe treat.
Consider changing the tradition altogether. Get children together at a party in the house with a costume parade and pumpkin decorating. Rather than using knives, stick with allergen-free paints, markers, and stickers. Another trick-or-treat alternative: Play a game at home where children knock on each door at home. They are greeted — at the front or back door, bedroom, bathroom, etc. — with a treat at each spot.
Getting your ghost on Ghoul and trigger your home is a big deal for Canadian retailers, but the current economy is scaring off consumers. A recent survey indicates that consumers would spend an average of $ 56.31 on Halloween, down 15% since last year.
"The economy has taken on Halloween this year," said Tracy Mullin, president and CEO of the National Retail Federation."They know that Americans are looking to celebrate on a budget, there is no doubt we will see the creativity of costume and decorating ideas in a price range imaginable."
The Retail Council of Canada has not reported earnings spent most of the season for Halloween 2008 trick-or-Treaters this side of the border.

1. Do not say "Boo" to Bulk Bins
